USC’s Alternate Media Guide Cover

USC recently unveiled their media guide cover for this season, but what they failed to mention is that just like Alabama, they created more than one.  We happen to have a copy of the alternate version they didn’t release at Media Days.  [H/T Ghost of Neyland]

Days.

  • [...] Crimson Daddy’s USC Fark flamed some great debate on the subject of who was the better coach: Bryant or Neyland? Although I am a diehard Volunteer, I am able to reason, and there is no doubt in my mind that Paul Bryant is the more successful (successful, not better) coach of the two.  It is tough to compare the two coaches since they cover two different spans of college football history, with a small overlap in their coaching careers.  Being bored out of my mind and stuck in this West Texas town of El Paso, I decided to determine out of each SEC school’s best coach historically; how do they stack up against each other. I’ll be framing this at home and wallpapering my cube with it at work. Awesome. Fantastic. And everything he deserves.

If im not mistaken doesn’t the real one have all-americans on also?
If it does then shouldn’t they take that away also?

  • 5
    BDLC:

This cover makes me all warm and fuzzy.

    Bama>UT:

Forgot to mention his greatest accompliments – all those moral victories last year. Remember Vol nation he lead you to all those “almost wins.”

  • 7
    Phocion:

    Excellent point B>UTk, excellent point.

Also, you will remember that their program was on the right track back to SEC east mediocrity right up to the point where the Mayflower truck pulled up at kiffykins’ house. If the only thing that changes in a time machine altered history was kiffy taking the SC job could you image the stories from the vile faithful about how this off-season was just the modern day version of what Bear did with A&M ?

    • 7.1

Pho, what do you think of Dooley? Just curious.

      • 7.1.1
        Phocion:

Can’t say at this point, and neither can anyone else. With no similar job, meaning major program, on his resume it is all just a big guess

Therefore, all the comparisons to Saban, even if they are just wishful thinking, are some much misplaced nonsense. If Vols fans want to compare the two, it should be to the Michigan State Saban rather that the one that took the job at Alabama with Two stints at major programs, an NFL stint, and a national championship on his resume prior to getting off the plane in Tuscaloosa.

  • 8

Boy Blunder made UT the laughning stock of college football last year and now you have a head coach with
class and hope he gets the vols turned around in the SEC eastern division. Watching Dooley is like listening
to Saban but with a southern accent and his mother Barbara is a piece of work!!

    Bama>UT:

I had to listen to a UT fan babble on and on today about UT history so I just thought I would share my findings during the discussion.

“general neyland was great and never lost to the Bear” – the first thing any UT homer throws out.

    Let’s just compare facts.

    Paul “Bear” Bryant
    323 – 85 – 17
    6 national championships
    14 SEC championships
    24 consecutive bowls
“Greatest coach in college football history”

    robert neyland
    173 – 31 – 12
    1 national championship
    5 SEC championships
    losing bowl record
“Pretty good coach but not even the best in his own era”

Now the real surprise to UT fans – robert never beat Bear while at Alabama. ( I thought the poor UT fan was gonna cry when I broke him the news, because he had heard that little exaggeration his entire life). And during roberts great career at UT, Bama won 3 conference championships of their own.

Please UT nation educate your fans. In the future when you compare your 2nd greatest coach of all time, Fulmer is the best according to the stats, please compare him with one of the great Bama coaches a little farther down on the list. Maybe Frank Thomas.

    Frank Thomas
    115 – 24 – 7
    1 national championship
    4 SEC championships

There’s no shame in comparing robert to Frank Thomas. They were both “great coaches” who won “A” championship during their era. Please stop with any “Bear” reference going forward. In fact I think UT nation should stop short of even saying the word bear, much less comparing or associating themselves with the greatness and tradition that is “Bear Bryant” or Alabama Football. All time series record 47 Bama – 38 ut – 7 ties (and that includes the 1993 non win as a ut win)

One last little thing – a trivia question.
Q: What sec school has a winning record against every current team in the conference?
    A: ??? any thought

    • 9.1

I noticed the “current” designation in your question which is necessary because Sewanee gave up football before Alabama could turn the record around, but for all the great teams in the history of college football, I will assert the 1899 Sewanee Tigers as possibly the greatest.

Consider all these facts about 1899:
The Tigers went 12-0, beating opponents a combined 322-10.
They shut out all but one opponent (Auburn, in the second to last game of the season, played in Montgomery).
During a six day stretch from Nov 9th through Nov 14th, they played five games in five different cities covering three different states and went 5-0, shutting out in order: Texas (Austin), Texas A&M (Houston), Tulane (New Orleans), LSU (Baton Rouge), and Ole Miss (Memphis).
Other teams they shut out that are still playing football: Georgia, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, and UNC.
They only played 3 home games.

Where did this come from? Are you just talking to air? How did this discussion come from the post above?

Did you just feel like inciting an argument?

    TN>Bama:

Its always nice how a simple photoshop joke can turn into a Bama history lesson..Move along…

    • 10.1

Seriously. I got a good chuckle out of the typical Alabama attitude, “I haven’t told somebody today how much better we are than you. I think I will.”

      Get a life.

    • 10.2
      Bama>UT:

Since history lessons are no fun, should we discuss the present or the future? Either works for me:)

      • 10.2.1

Believe it or not, I’m HONESTLY glad you’re here. We haven’t had any SMACK TALK on here in months. We’ve been pretty butt-hurt for a while. But even though we’re going off the 10 percent chance (generously) that we can beat y’all this year, hope always springs eternal, so why not?

    TN>Bama:

    history lessons boooorrrriinnnnngggggggg…..shut up bammers

one thing we learn from history is it often repeats itself – see 2009.

    TN>Bama:

Hmm lemme see according to BCS history. Who has won back to back BCS titles. Oh yeah, no one. It won’t happen. Move along cheaters.

    • 14.1

You’re right, with such a rich data set as twelve games, it’s pretty clear that is never going to happen.

      • 14.1.1
        TN>Bama:

Who are you the nerd from The Simpsons? “With such a rich data set” wtf. Lol.

        • I am the nerd from the Simpsons. You figured it out.

          • TN>Bama:

Who says the nerd from the Simpson’s is smart?? He def resembles a Bama fan though. Based on the rich data set of Bama inhabitants that roam the region to the south of the greatest state in the country Tennessee.

            • I read what you’re saying, but all I hear is “it tastes like burning!”

              • TN>Bama:

Nice Wiggum reference. You are smart un’. I am from TN, so i talk like i’m uneducated.

                • Why even bring education into a discussion about football? Whatever education you state you have amounts to nothing. You could very well be a ten year old girl in the Phillipines for all it matters. It doesn’t somehow make Tennessee a better team or Alabama worse.

  • 15
    Bama>UT:

OK emotional little UT fans. Take a deep breath, you to florida boy, and let’s work on that team building exercise I taught you last week, ready? Vol nation all together now – “we’re number 2″ – “we’re number 2″ – “we’re number 2.” Although these days I guess you would gladly return to your rightful place of being the second best team in the conference.

  • 16
    BDLC:

Tidefan in fact looks just like the nerd from the Simpson’s.

  • 17
    Tusk:

Tidefan, appreciated your post about Sewanee, the Tide’s first great rivalry. I agree about the 1899 team, and their “Ol’ Sewanee” cheer is still the greatest in college football. RTR

    Phocion:

    Ghost

There is simply no way to know what the man is going to be like as a coach. There are a couple of things, mostly involving PR, that he could have handled better but it isn’t as if he made a disaster of them. And we won’t know a thing about him as a coach until he gets a few big boy SEC games under his belt. Remember Tennessee put up a couple of big numbers against so
E chimps last year before kiffy’s skirt got blown up his leg and he decided to play as is minimizing the deficit…Florida, Alabama….to say nothing of the UCLA loss. Tennessee is under manned, on that we can all agree. By mid O toner we’ll all know if the Vols are going to be undercoached as well.

I just ask that that Saban comparisons cease. Yes, I understand vols fans want to think that is there future but even if it is, shouldn’t you guys be looking at the Saban of Michigan State vintage…the place he first broke into the bigs…rather than the Saban of Alabama vintage that has loads of experience, an NFL stint, and a national championship before he ever got off the runway in Tuscaloosa.

    • 19.1
      DownTheField:

The comparisons between Saban and Dooley are from the way both coaches conduct themselves and the demeanor with which both coaches carry. He is a Saban disciple after all. So no, the comparisons wont cease, as long as there is something there to compare.

      • 19.1.1
        Bama>UT:

Just like the comparisons between robert neyland and Paul Bear Bryant.

        • Barney:

Well while we are comparing Bear and Neyland I think that their is one statistical area that Neyland wins soundly. That would be winning percentage. I worked the number and found that Neyland won 80% of his games while Bear only won 76% of his games. If Robert Neyland had coached an equal number of games as Bear Bryant in his career (425) and if this trend had continued, Robert Neyland would’ve won 340 games with only 80 losses or ties. Now this is all purely speculative, but there is nothing wrong with wishful thinking, eh?

Also here’s a fun fact about Nick Saban: Did you know that Nick Saban has never stayed in one locale for more than five years? Now he is set to break that figure at Alabama as he is under contract for eight years. I know the man has already spurned one SEC powerhouse for another, and we all know that if you marry someone who has cheated before, they can certainly cheat again.

      • 19.1.2
        Phocion:

The problem arises when Vols fans start talking about UTk 2013 being like Alabama 2009…because Dooley is a ‘Saban-guy, etc.” If you want to talk about Saban and what he did to a program and how Dooley could replicate that then look to Year 3 at Michigan State, not Alabama. You aren’t Alabama…Dooley isn’t Saban.

  • 20

Wow I love these friendly conversations

  • 21
    BDLC:

Haha, I figured the winning percentage was left out on purpose. I must say, your screen name is a favorite of mine. Math references make this Tennessee born, Alabama educated engineer happy. With that heritage UT>Bama must think I’m some mutant.

Alabamafan, you are right: you can’t compare NCs between Bryant and Neyland, but leaving that as the only comparison is well, naïve.

  • 22

BDLC correct, but NC’s are the reason that bear is a better coach then Neyland. They are the tie breaker,it’s the extra thing that put’s bear over Neyland

  • 23

Hey Ghost, Is Rod Wilks going to be the starter this year? He is the only Voll that I cheer for. I was wondering because I used to watch his games in high school.
