Game Day Experience: UT-Martin

Posted in Uncategorized by Brandon Price on September 6, 2010 3 Comments

Opening Day is always a special one, especially in Knoxville.  This one was especially exciting for me, as this is the first year my family has had season tickets.  That teamed with a new coach, and a renovated Neyland Stadium, it’s needless to say that I had lead foot syndrome all the way from my Huntsville, AL home to Knoxville.

My brother and I had decided that our first stop would be Litton’s Burgers in Fountain City.  Our dad hadn’t been to this local favorite (and featured on Todd Blackledge’s Taste of the Town,” and being a huge cheeseburger lover, Litton’s did not disappoint him.  I went for their classic 1/3 lb Litton’s Burger with thick cut bacon, smoked cheddar, fresh jalapenos, onion, maters, and lettuce, all piled up on a fresh baked burger roll.  Matched with an order of fresh cut fries, diet Coke, and finished off with their famous Red Velvet Cup Cake.

Vols Depth Chart Released; Williams Moved Inside

Posted in Uncategorized by Brandon Price on August 30, 2010 4 Comments

The Vols officially released their opening day Depth Chart today.  A few points of interest:

  • True Freshman Rule the Line:  The Vols O-Line currently have five freshmen in the 2 Deep.  Mammoth Ja’Wuan James is starting at Right Tackle, and is backed by Daniel Hood.  Marques Pair, James Stone, and Zach Fulton are 2nd String at LT, LG and RG respectively.  This amount of freshman on the 2 Deep is somewhat frightening, but I’m trying to stay focused on the future.
  • Gerald Williams Moves to DT: In a somewhat surprising move, Gerald Williams has slid to Defensive Tackle, and will start along side the bipolar talent Montori Hughes.  This off-season Williams finally embraced the reality that he’s not going to play linebacker and beefed up.  At this point Williams is our best option, and is an upgrade from the other potatoes.
  • Eric Gordon and Marsalis Teague are CB Co-Starters:  Teague moved D-Back out of necessity and not convenience this off season, and immediately has impressed.  Gordon will start in most packages, and Teague will get a lot of looks during the Nickel.
  • Palardy Out Kicked:  (While swallowing lump in throat) Daniel Lincoln beat out Mike Palardy for the starting kicking duties.  Tonight there will be visions of Terrancy Cody’s Man Tits bouncing in my head.
  • Da’Rick not in 2 Deep:  Don’t take this as a knock on Da’Rick, but a credit to how well Zach Rogers and Justin Hunter have excelled during camp.  Wide Receiver U is in good hands for years to come.  Now, if we can just get the ball in their hands.

I Know It’s Football Season, but…

THOUGHTS?

Vols Quick Hitters

Posted in Uncategorized by Brandon Price on August 23, 2010 15 Comments

Just a few quick things to get us going this Monday morning…

SIMMS NAMED STARTER

On the back of Tyler Bray’s 4 interception performance Saturday, Dooley announced this weekend that Matt Simms is going to be the starting quarterback going into the UT-Martin game.  This isn’t shocking news, but it hasn’t been officially announced up to this point.  Simms’ completion percentage is of concern, but he provides the team with the most experienced option.

YEARLY EXPECTATIONS

I highly recommend everyone check out Brent Hubbs’ recent article on his Volquest Site.  Every preseason Hubbs publishes an expectation memo to Volquest members, and this is one of his best.

Also worth checking out, is Wes Rucker’s article weighing in on the Vols depth concerns

GENERAL NEYLAND’S STATUE UNDERWAY

The pedestal is complete, and the 12 foot statue of General Neyland will be unveiled at Homecoming against Ole Miss.

A Quick Hamilton Vent

“I know he’s deeply involved in the Reggie Bush Scandal, but his wife sure is smokin’” – AD MH

Last night our friends at Volquest reported that Tennessee Football season ticket sales were behind by 3,000 from last year.  Unfortunately this is becoming the rule rather than the exception on Rocky Top.  The Hamilton Excuse Train started at the 2008 Home Season Opener against UAB when only around 95,000 fans were in attendance.  Hey come on, as Hamilton explained, it was hot that day, the economy sucks, and we had this new miracle invention: HDTV!  Of course we’d be 10,000 fans short.  Suuuurely it had nothing to do with the product.

I’m sick of this guy.  I’m sick of his excuses.  I’m sick of hearing about the economy. I’m sick of hearing about HDTV.  Our product sucks, and has sucked for 3 years, and inconsistant over the last 9 years.  FACE IT Hamilton.  Stop making excuses.  Are other schools in the SEC struggling with ticket sales?  How long do you have to wait to get season tickets at Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, or LSU?

Hamilton seems ok with the prospect of a crowd of 95,000, simply because there are 120 other teams that never match those numbers!  Empty seats be damned!  Bring on another CRIMSON OUT on October 23rd, just so we can relive the 2008 game again.

Simply, put a product on the field and they will come.  BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME.

Mike Hamilton: You say your head is not in the sand on this issue.  I’d agree, your head is firmly planted somewhere else.

Fun With Numbers: Who is the Best SEC Coach Ever?

Posted in Uncategorized by Brandon Price on August 1, 2010 55 Comments

Crimson Daddy’s USC Fark flamed some great debate on the subject of who was the better coach: Bryant or Neyland? Although I am a diehard Volunteer, I am able to reason, and there is no doubt in my mind that Paul Bryant is the more successful (successful, not better) coach of the two.  It is tough to compare the two coaches since they cover two different spans of college football history, with a small overlap in their coaching careers.  Being bored out of my mind and stuck in this West Texas town of El Paso, I decided to determine out of each SEC school’s best coach historically; how do they stack up against each other.
